A unique opportunity to spend the day sketching inside a working tide mill.
Woodbridge Tide Mill is one of only two tide mills in the country to be fully restored and operational. The gigantic oak water wheel still turns and is capable of grinding wholemeal flour.
The Tide Mill which stands on the River Deben was first recorded on this site over 800 years ago; the current building dates back to the 17th century and its machinery showcases the innovation and technology of the early Industrial Revolution.
There is plenty in this atmospheric building to inspire, from the working machinery and mill wheels to the artefacts and tools with their handles worn smooth by hundreds of years of use.
Outside the mill there is the millpond, a gallery overlooking the tidal river and busy harbour, and plenty of quiet space to draw.
There will be mini-masterclasses on topics like colours of the mill and river, how to choose a subject and resolving drawing difficulties; there will be time to make a series of quick sketches and/ or work on a more considered painting, with help on hand from tutor Claudia Myatt.
Art Safari’s riverside studio is very nearby, and we will take our tea and coffee breaks here.
Lunch is an hour, please bring your own packed lunch or pop into one of the many cafes in Woodbridge.
To help you prepare we will send you a short list of suggested art materials to bring with you.
