28th September to 14th November
Private view 1pm – 3pm 28th September
Why call this Show Surface?
The idea comes from Joan Mitchell, the American Abstract Artist, who when asked about her work said, “Abstract is not a style. I simply want to make a surface work”.
Women abstract artists are finally having their day, with recent shows of work by Lee Krasner, Amy Sillman, Sandra Blow, Wilhelmina Barns- Graham, and Agnes Martin.
We want to continue the focus on women’s abstract art here at Gallery East and have chosen eight fabulous women abstract artists, many of them working and living in East Anglia.

Sula Rubens RWS
Each of our artists make their surface work in a different way, using different techniques and with their own take on the space between representation and the abstract. You can hear from them directly as they do a brief Q & A about their work at the private viewing on 28th September.
