Suffolk Coastal District Council has announced Badingham Shop and Café as the winner of The Chairman’s Award at this year’s Suffolk Coastal Business & Community Awards. The Café was selected as a stand-out community success story by outgoing Chairman, Cllr Susan Harvey.
During her 2015-16 term in office, Cllr Susan Harvey visited every Parish in the Suffolk Coastal District and was very impressed by the range of community events, initiatives and projects. One, in particular stood-out for her as a worthy winner of The Chairman’s Award.
Cllr Harvey explains why she chose The Badingham Shop and Café: “It is an amazing project which has involved the whole community and the local Church – and the result is delightful. The shop is quickly becoming a hub in the village, selling local produce and showcasing local craftspeople. It’s a real meeting place for locals and visiting cyclists and walkers.”
Headed up by Tanya Newton and Karen Gregory, the shop sells locally grown fruit and vegetables, bread, eggs and other staples including Badingham Bees honey and coffee from the Suffolk Coffee Company. The small café serves a range of light lunches, homemade cakes, coffees and teas. It also has a range of hand-crafted products including Jewellery by Rebecca Doe, pictures by artist Gill Bedson, ceramics by Hannah Berridge, ‘Myrtle made it’ handmade flowers and Olya hand-made cards and trinkets.
Tanya says, “Our shop and café is a real community venture run by a fantastic group of volunteers who support in a variety of ways from building and setting up the shop to others who delight us with their regular custom; all have such a key role to play and have been integral in developing further, the great community spirit existing within Badingham.
We are indebted particularly to Cllr Carol Poulter and to Cllr Susan Harvey who, from the outset, has given us her support, enthusiasm and sound advice. We are delighted to receive this award on behalf of the Badingham shop and café volunteers – please come and visit our quirky, wonderful café you are assured of a warm welcome”.
Karen and Tanya will receive The Chairman’s award at the Suffolk Coastal Business & Community Awards Dinner on 15th September at The Hangar at Kesgrave Hall alongside the winners of the other 14 awards: Team of the Year, Club of the Year, New Business of the Year, Business Growth, Services to the Community – Group, Services to the Community – Individual, Innovation, Great & Green, Charity Champion, Customer Focus, People Development, Health & Wellbeing, Encouraging Tourism and Enabling Communities.
