It’s #WoodbridgeWednesday – our favourite way to celebrate the faces and places which make our town special. Darrell Smith is the wool specialist of Archway Carpets, Church Street, Woodbridge, and boasts more than 30 years of experience in domestic carpet and vinyl and contract flooring for businesses.
What would you say are the top three skills needed to run a successful business?
Passion, a wish to succeed and support
Describe/outline your typical day?
My day involves room planning and working with customers on site or in store to produce their very own flooring luxury.
What motivates you?
Family and friends and the wish to do well.
How do you build a successful customer base?
Good customer service means that you will be referred. Building a network of other local businesses and just offering a great service results in that as well as treating people as you would want to be treated.
If you could talk to one person from history, who would it be and why?
Oh, there are so many. I would have to Say Henry VIII just to get his side of the story! l love the UK’s history and how it helped shape our country into what it is today.
Who has been your greatest inspiration?
My children and my wife, Vicki
What is your favourite book and why?
Again so many to choose from but I enjoy the Harry Potter’s total escapism.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Joining the family business, which is now almost eight years ago.
What are your hobbies?
I like to travel but I am also a fan of Lego collection (yes that is correct!) and I have a large Star Wars Lego collection.
What makes you happy?
Getting up and going out to work to provide for my family and to enjoy those moments in life. Holidays, family time the comforts of home.
Where you see yourself and your business in five years? 10 years?
Who knows? But hopefully happy and healthy with new stores in the local area.
What do you most love about living and working in Woodbridge?
Woodbridge is its very own community and I love that. I enjoy the walk to the shop in the mornings and so many people say “Good Morning!” It really starts the day off well.
