Swifts to find a home in the Tide Mill

News ArticleSwifts to find a home in the Tide Mill

The decline in swift numbers is causing alarm to wildlife experts and nature lovers.

One of the major factors is the lack of suitable nesting sites which tend to be holes in building roofs.

Major efforts are being made UK wide to encourage builders to incorporate special bricks under the eaves for them to nest in.

Swifts will also nest in special boxes and the Tide Mill has fixed one such box under the Lucam.

The Tide Mill also play swift calls to attract birds to the nestbox. Calls are played between 6am and 9am and 6pm and 9pm which are the times when they are most likely to be looking for suitable sites.
