Woodbridge finalist in Great British High Street Awards

News ArticleWoodbridge finalist in Great British High Street Awards

We have some incredibly exciting news to share with you!

The Thoroughfare in Woodbridge is one of just 13 high streets in England to have been shortlisted in the Great British High Street Awards.

It is now in the running for the coveted title of Champion High Street in the UK.

The awards are run by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and celebrate our high streets and the people they serve.

James Lightfoot, chairman of Choose Woodbridge which entered the high street into the awards, said: “This is an absolutely huge triumph for Woodbridge – and the whole of Suffolk.

“These awards celebrate the most ambitious high streets in the UK. The Thoroughfare boasts a diverse make-up of independent and family-run shops, is home to a host of vivid, vibrant events and to residents and business-owners who believe passionately this is a destination to showcase the gems of Suffolk.”

Last year Woodbridge was named the Sunday Times “best place to live” in the East of England and made the top 10 happiest places to live in the UK according to Rightmove.

Now, thanks to this nomination, its high street is set to make waves nationally, boosting tourist numbers in the region and putting the town on the map.

And that is not all.

The Great British High Street awards do not only celebrate the best high streets across the nation but also champion a High Street Hero for each nominated street.

In Woodbridge, Tony Moorcroft, whose fundraiser for Alzheimer’s brought the community together to raise £10,000 in 50 days, has received this accolade.

James Lightfoot added: “Like many of our business owners in Woodbridge, Tony is an asset to the local community. He embodies the community spirit that acts like the beating heart of this town.”

Help us win!

The Great British High Street awards were first held in 2014 and have been simplified for 2018 with winning high streets to be named in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – across 2 categories: Champion High Street and Rising Star High Street.

The shortlisted entries in the Champion High Street category – of which The Thoroughfare is one – will be visited by a judging panel over the next few weeks.

For Woodbridge, this will take place on Friday, September 28th.

A public vote will also help decide a winner and you will be instrumental in this.

All you have to do is vote for Woodbridge on the Great British High Street awards Twitter and Facebook pages using the hashtag #MyHighStreet and #GBHSWoodbridge.

The winning high street will be announced in November, with the winner receiving a £10,000 cash prize for a local community project.

Join the party!

On our judging day – Friday, September 28th – we will be holding a street party in The Thoroughfare and are inviting you to join us!

All shops along The Thoroughfare will be decorated and will be running their own in-store promotions and activities.

We hope to be bringing extra events, displays and attractions to the high street on the day to add to the celebration.

Street teams from the Great British High Street awards team will also be on hand surprising and delighting consumers with giveaways.
