News ArticleWoodbridge exhibition of local paintings

The Artspace Gallery in Woodbridge’s Thoroughfare will be graced in January by an exhibition of paintings by noted local artist John Roberts.

His works have taken in the grandeur of great cities such as Budapest, Vienna and Prague, and his paintings are in the hands of collectors around the world.

But he always comes back to the quirky architecture and historical style of Woodbridge, which makes it for him the perfect English country town, his home for 40 years.

The visual delights of other local towns such as Framlingham and Southwold also feature in Roberts’s oils, but his images are not sentimental; his is a real world shown in a robust painting style and in a rich, deep palette, his intention being to penetrate below the surface to a drama often missed in the seemingly idyllic East Anglian scenes.

Watch for his outstanding capture of light, from the luminescence of town scenes lit by street lamps to his deft dappling of sunlight on a woodland ride.

His themes are graphically strong – from townscapes and harbours to windswept sea shores and fishing boats tied up in a tangle of ropes.

The exhibition, entry free, is at Artspace, 64 Thoroughfare, Woodbridge from 2 to 15 January 10.00am to 6.00pm daily
