The Unruly Pig “shell-shocked but thrilled” at spot in UK’s Top 10 Gastropubs

News ArticleThe Unruly Pig “shell-shocked but thrilled” at spot in UK’s Top 10 Gastropubs

Woodbridge gastropub wins ‘Highest Climber’ in prestigious Estrella Damm UK Top 50 Gastropub Awards 2021.

These have not been the best of times for too many pubs and restaurants in the UK but The Unruly Pig in Woodbridge Suffolk has now great reason to celebrate as it has just won a top 10 spot in the prestigious Estrella Damm UK Top 50 Gastropub Awards 2021.

This multi award winning pub has been voted the ‘Highest Climber’ in the UK after placing 29th on last year’s list, which is voted on by top foodies, chefs and hospitality experts. Judges described the pub as “winsome, witty and warm” serving “well-crafted… food in an environment that reflects the owner’s personality.”

They added “(Owner) Brendan Padfield, as well as being a maverick, has completely transformed the former award-winning British Larder into the phenomenon that is Suffolk’s Unruly Pig and 2021 Highest Climber.”

Mr Padfield who opened the pub six years ago after a 36-year stint as a solicitor said “When I set out on this journey, I never honestly imagined that Dave Wall and his team in the kitchen and the front of house team could have achieved national fame and glory.

“I am a bit shell shocked but delighted, stunned and overwhelmed. The team have just made me the proudest man alive today. We climbed 19 places from 29th to 10th.

“The pandemic has been really tough for everyone.” said Brendan. “Hospitality has been one of the sectors that has been hit more than some. Providing things go to plan, if we can reopen on 17th May, by then we will have been closed for a total period of nine and half months since first locked down in March 2020.

“This award is nearly as welcome as my recent vaccination jab! It is a real shot in the arm for Dave Wall, Head Chef and the whole of the wonderful Unruly team and is a testament to their sheer hard work and dedication. These awards are voted on by our peers so the fact that so many great chefs and restaurant owners up and down the land have voted for us means so very much. Yet again the team have made me so, so proud.”

The prestigious list contains many Michelin starred pubs such as Tom Kerridge’s The Coach in Marlow. Whilst The Unruly Pig has the highest ranking of any gastropub in East Anglia (and is the only such gastropub in Suffolk) other East Anglian pubs named in the list were:

The Gunton Arms, Cromer, Norfolk at number 49

The Duck at Stanhoe, Norfolk at number 43

Head Chef of The Unruly Pig, Dave Wall, added: “I can’t think there has been a more challenging year in the whole of my career but that’s what makes this award so incredibly special. It’s a privilege and honour just to be part of this top 50 list (and be considered amongst the best in the UK) but the award is just icing on the cake.”
